Miami Marlins manager Skip Schumaker has been named Manager of the Year after leading his team to the postseason in his first year at the helm.
The Baseball Writers" Association of America (BBWAA) announced its Manager of the Year awards on Friday.
Schumaker won the National League (NL) manager of the year award with 72 points, including eight first-, second-, and third-place votes. Craig Counsell, who recently left the Milwaukee Brewers to manage the Chicago Cubs this year, finished second with 51 points.
In his first year, Schumaker took Miami to fall ball. It was the first time in 20 years since 2003 that Miami reached the postseason in a 162-game format, excluding shortened seasons.
He is the fourth Miami manager to win Manager of the Year honors, joining Jack McKeon (2003), Joe Girardi (2006) and Don Mattingly (2020). He is the seventh NL manager to win the award in his first season as a full-time manager.
Schumaker, who spent time as a utility player with the St. Louis Cardinals, Los Angeles Dodgers, and Cincinnati Reds during his playing days, was also a teammate of Ryu Hyun-jin (Toronto Blue Jays) in 2013.
In the American League (AL), Baltimore Orioles manager Brandon Hyde was named Manager of the Year.
Hyde received an overwhelming 144 points, including 27 first-place votes and three second-place votes. Bruce Bochy, who led the Texas Rangers to a World Series title, finished second with 61 points.
After going 52-110 in 2021, Baltimore went 101-61 this year to win the AL East. It"s the first time since 1980 that the Orioles have won more than 100 games. Since joining the Orioles in December 2018, Hyde has transformed a team that was labeled a perennial underdog.
Hyde is the fourth Baltimore manager to be named Manager of the Year, joining Buck Showalter (2014), Davey Johnson (1997) and Frank Robinson (1989).
